The First Pizzeria
The first pizzeria in the world was Queen Margherita Pizza, which opened on December 31, 1889 at Via della Condotta 35 in Naples, Italy. The story of how it got its name is an interesting one too. It is said that the pizza maker, Raffaele Esposito, had been asked by a customer to come up with a dish for his wife Queen Margherita. The queen’s favorite colors were red and green.
Raffaele Esposito created the first pizza with the colors of the Italian flag- tomato sauce and olive oil on a base of mozzarella cheese which he believed looked like a pizza. And so their was born ‘the Queen Margherita Pizza’- so called because of its resemblance to the colors of the Italian flag as well as its name sake – Queen Margherita.
Pizza After World War II
In the late 1940s, pizza became a popular dish in America. This is due to the mass migration of Italian immigrants after World War II. These immigrants brought their recipes and traditions with them to America, which influenced how Americans cooked their pizzas.
Since then, pizza has been loved by many and become a staple in many cultures around the world. In fact, there are over 194 countries that have a variation of pizza as a national dish! The most popular topping for this village dish is tomato sauce but other types of sauces can be used as well.

Neapolitan pizzas are the original style. This dough is made from flour, water, yeast and salt. The crust is very thin and crispy on the outside with a soft center. Toppings are added last to preserve freshness of the dough.

Other Types of Pizza
There are so many variations of pizza around the world, but not all of them are American-style. There’s a place in Italy where you can get pizza with mozzarella and anchovy on top, for example. Pizza is also popular in France, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Greece, and India.
It’s hard to find a country that doesn’t have some type of pizza shop or restaurant. Pizza has even made its way into unlikely places like Japan and Thailand.
The other types of pizzas might not be the same as American-style pizza though—the toppings are often different to match the culture’s palate. For instance, cheese is often used instead of tomato sauce because cheese is more common in Europe than tomato sauce is.
